JAKARTA: The Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation (LBH Jakarta) says it will screen a documentary on medical malpractice in Indonesia to commemorate World Health Day, which falls on April 7.
The feature-length documentary, Conspiracy of Silence, directed by rising filmmaker Ucu Agustin and produced by Nia Dinata, detailed the woes of people who allegedly received horrible treatment from Indonesian doctors that resulted in, among other things, an infant’s blindness and college professor’s post-operative paralysis.
Richer Indonesians were shown in the film going abroad for medical care while poorer people struggled through a star chamber-like legal system to hold their doctors’ accountable.
The title of the documentary refers to the strong esprit d’corps of Indonesian doctors, who, according to the film, have turned a deaf ear to patient complaints. The screening will take place at LBH’s Jakarta’s office on Jl. Diponegoro No. 74, Menteng, Central Jakarta at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday. — JP
